Experts from multiple medical societies have published collaborative guidance on the use of cardiac CT for prosthetic heart valve (PHV) assessment June 17 in Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
The document provides consensus guidance based on best practices from both literature and experience on how to perform, interpret, and report cardiac CT scans performed for PHV assessment.
The collaboration comprised radiologists, cardiologists, and surgeons representing RSNA, the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the European Society of Cardiovascular Radiology (ESCR), the North American Society for Cardiovascular Imaging (NASCI), the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI), the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT), and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).
The guidance document provides an overview of heart valve replacement and imaging techniques for PHV assessment, as well as a discussion of the role of cardiac CT in cases of PHV dysfunction.
Additionally, it offers guidance on correct indications and patient selection for CT assessment of PHVs, image acquisition, reconstruction, and measurement protocols, as well as interpreting and reporting CT findings for specific types of PHV dysfunction.
