In 2024, 75% of PET systems were serviced by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), 15% were serviced in-house, and 15% by third parties, according to the newly published IMV 2025 PET Market Summary Report.
In addition, by facility type, hospitals with 400 or more beds had the largest percentage of systems serviced in-house, at 29%, while independent PET sites had the largest percentage of systems serviced by independent service organizations (ISO), at 24%.

Compared with 2023, the 2024 overall breakdown of the types of service support has remained relatively consistent in terms of the percentage of units covered by OEM, in-house, and ISO support.
Additional detail regarding PET service contracts was covered in the 2023 IMV Diagnostic Imaging Equipment Service Outlook Report. According to that report, 48% of postwarranty PET systems were covered by a modality-specific contract with service providers that support multiple modalities, 43% of systems are covered by single contracts covering multiple modalities, 7% by modality-specific contracts with service providers that support only PET systems, and 2% under a time and materials arrangement.
In the 2023 report, the top support services included in more than 50% of PET/CT service contracts were preventive maintenance visits during routine working hours, technical support by telephone, OEM parts, software updates for bug fixes, and preventive maintenance visits after hours. Interestingly, no single type of support service was included in more than 70% of contracts, indicating that there are likely key differences between service contracts offered by different OEMs, in-house service capabilities, and ISOs.
In summary, the 2024 report indicates that the vast majority of PET/CT systems are serviced by the OEM, and the types of support services covered by postwarranty contracts vary notably. Further, the type and quality of service coverage for a PET/CT system are very important aspects of purchasing and owning a PET/CT system and are worthy of meaningful consideration and evaluation.
