In this talk, researchers will report on the benefits of AI-based automatic positioning and scan range for chest CT exams.
Presenter Ximing Cao and colleagues prospectively studied 400 patients undergoing chest CT exams, all with the same scan protocols except for the positioning method. Patients were randomized to receive either manual positioning and scan range or AI-based automatic positioning and scan range. Subjective image quality assessments were then independently assessed by two radiologists.
Although no significant differences were found in subjective image quality scores between the two groups of patients, the researchers found that the automated positioning protocol was an average of 40.5% faster than manual positioning. What’s more, the patient group receiving automated positioning had significantly lower radiation dose across all metrics, including volume computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol), dose length product (DLP), and effective dose. A small, but statistically significant improvement in scan range was also achieved, according to the researchers.
“The AI-based automatic positioning and scan range in chest CT imaging is useful for reducing radiation dose and optimizing imaging workflow without reducing the image quality,” the authors wrote.
