The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) this week published its 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) proposed rule, which would yield a 2% increase for radiology and nuclear medicine, as well as 3% gains for interventional radiology and radiation oncology. A recent study has spotlighted a growing crisis: the disappearance of radiation oncology clinics from many rural and community-based settings. In fact, more than two-thirds of all U.S. counties — representing nearly 51 million people — don’t have a radiation oncology practice.
